There was a fantastic turn out for this years test, which saw 30 dogs enter the Open and 41 enter the Novice, and not even the persistent drizzle could dampen the spirits on the day as the test started around 9:15 am, a little earlier than planned due to the number of entries.
Fortunately we were able to run the novice and open test at the same time which enabled the test to conclude at a reasonable hour. Many thanks to Roger Shepherd for officiating in my absence and to all those that threw the dummies and fired the shots, also Sarah Gazey (GT Leads) Mike Lewis (Meadow View Vineyard) Jane Stenner. Alwyn Prichard and Leighton Rees for their kind donations towards our very successful raffle.

Report
The first 2 dogs down were “Tailorsdrift Shadowland” Chris Morgan and “Countryways Fran” Geoff Shore, they were cast off into a nice strip of game crop, and it wasn’t to long before Tailorsdrift punched out a hen bird which was retrieved without to much fuss, which completed their first run. To be replaced by Clodahill Ozil handled by Gavin Lockyear, unfortunately he passed a bird and was lost. Meanwhile on the left hand beat Fran and Geoff weren’t making contact with the same amount of game as the right hand beat even though she was hunting smartly with pace, eventually she met a rabbit, which was taken by the L/H gun, a nice retrieve completed Geoff and Fran’s run.
We then moved into woodland, unfortunately the viewing was restricted, so I’m unable to report more, other than to say that “Merovigian Mistletoe” handled by Paul Challans and “Bawdenflight Blue Summer” handled by James Bawden successfully completed their first runs, as did “Edgegrove Opal” handled by Andrew Faulkner “Phortaigh Sair of Countryways” handled by Andrea Perrett “Glynvilla Graceful at Merbrook” handler Roger Shepherd. Unfortunately that wasn’t the case with “Neuadd Seren Wen” handled by Mike Soroka, “Dunnbrigg Raving Beauty” handled by Karen Pinker, they were lost from the stake.
As the trial progressed, “Draigoch Brook” handled by David Gregory was slipped off into some thick strips of cover, and proceeded to handle them nicely and under control even though there were a lot of birds running forward, then as we neared the end of the cover, a cock Pheasant was shot, with no accurate mark, Brook was sent out into the field to look for the retrieve, even though she handled well to the whistle, she never seemed to pick any scent, so the judge decided to put her over a fence and back into the thick cover, and it wasn’t to long before she located the running cock bird and swiftly returned it to a very grateful handler.
As the trial was reaching it’s final stages, we lost “Kentelv Piccola Princess” Ken McAndrew and “Kentelv Bell of Tonyrefail” handler Ieuan Merriman. Goeff Shore’s Fran continued were she left off on her first run, hunting with plenty of desire, which paid off when she found a bird, which was shot blind to her in the field the other side of the cover she was hunting, even though I could not see the actual retrieve, I suspected it hadn’t been a clean fast retrieve as there was a fair bit of whistle being used….unfortunate indeed, as she’d been going really well.
The last few dogs were hunted through a lovely game strip, in which Andrea Perret and James Bawden’s dogs both managed 2 nice retrieves on partridge. Then it was back into the woods to complete the trial, the judges called an end to proceedings at around 1:35 pm, no run offs were required, so it was back to the shooting lodge for a cup of tea/coffee, a most enjoyable end to a most enjoyable trial.
Many thanks to our host Mr David Lewis and to Gamekeeper and steward of the beat Alastair Ross for a wonderful day in a wonderful setting with wonderful people.

Working Spaniel Test
Held at
Talyclun Farm Llangenech Nr Llanelli
By kind permission of Mr Kevin John & Mrs Jacqui John
on Sunday 3rd May 2015
www.fourfriendspetfoods.co.uk
After enjoying a welcoming cup of tea/coffee and biscuits on arrival, a record number of competitors registered to take part in the working test, 19 in the Open and 27 in the Novice. Although severe weather had been predicted earlier in the week by the met office, fortunately it ended up as only a little light drizzle, which cleared up just after the test started.
For those not familiar with the ground, or what’s expected when entering a working test. The ground consisted of patches of light rush on an open flat meadow. The judges were paying attention to the hunting, style, pace, marking ability, retrieving and the delivery of the dogs. The Novice test was a short hunt up, then a shot is fired, this is accompanied with a dummy being thrown in view of the competing dog. A further hunt up is followed by another shot, but this time the dummy has already been placed in a designated place and therefore unseen (blind). The Open is pretty much the same, the only difference being that all aspects of the test are intentionally made more difficult.
As advertised, the viewing was first class from the bank above the test ground, where the spectators could watch both the Novice & Open at the same time, which enabled the test to conclude around 1:00 pm. This was followed by a free buffet and then the winners presentation for a 1:35 pm finish, not bad for a 47 dog test.

This was the first time we had held a field trial at Stanton Park, which always makes me a little apprehensive as to how the day will go – will there be sufficient game ? will the ground be suitable ? even though some of our committee had assured me everything would be fine, you still tend to hope for the best but secretly fear the worse.
We were greeted on arrival with tea, coffee and hot sausage sandwiches, which is always a very welcome start to a day’s trialing. After the obligatory morning briefing and introductions were completed we were off.
Steve Brankin, the keeper at Stanton Park took us to a large wood, with undergrowth consisting mainly of bramble of varying thickness……. what some would describe as perfect spaniel ground, myself included.
The viewing for spectators was not always the best, so I can only comment on what I actually saw. The first brace of dogs down were Karen Pinker’s aptly named dog “Dunnrigg Raving Beauty” and David Herbert’s “Barcudwen Barley”. The game supply at this early point in the trial was a little sparse due to birds running on, which is not unusual problem at this time of year, this did force the judges to keep both dogs down a little longer than they probably would have wished. Eventually Karen completed her run with a blind retrieve on a hen Pheasant. David also completed his first run clean, but unfortunately was eliminated on his second after moving on a flush.
Next brace down were Richard Heseltine’s “Barcudwen Bolshie” and Keiron Pugh’s “Bryngwrhyd Oscar” both completing very neat, clean and tidy runs. These were followed by Jeff Rayners “Glynvilla Grolsh” and Russ Woodward’s “Stuffingwood Suprise” the latter coming through unscathed and the former having a fine run, but maybe not helped by failing on a blind retrieve on a very strong running cock Pheasant.
Mike Soroka’s “Neuadd Seren Wen” and Roger Wooldridge’s “Gola Storm Star” were next, both acquitted themselves well on this run, unfortunately both were lost on their next run.
Peter Neale’s “Kenxiam Zepher” and Peter Amor’s “Woodabudge Kerwick” came next, again both got through their first run only to be eliminated for unsteadiness on their second runs.
Paul Challans “Merovigian Mistletoe” and Martin Williams’ “Gartshore Verna” both these dogs hunted very well and and did not shy from some of the thicker cover, both completed very nice runs, although I do believe”Verna” was eliminated later in the trial, her offence is unclear to me at the moment.
Ken McAndrew’s smart little bitch “Kentelve Piccolo” and Maureen Smith’s “Balisla Dena” were the next pair down, whilst completing a fine first run, Ken was a little unlucky to go out, after a gun shot a loose bird directly over her as she sat whilst another dog was out on a retrieve, the temptation was to much for her and she was lost. Meanwhile Maureen and her bitch were having a run that was going to take some beating, hitting the cover with aggression, then just as she came out of the cover onto a ride in the wood, the dog was halted on the whistle, and then for some unknown reason decided to b*gger off, very disappointing indeed for Maureen after such a sparkling run.
Professor Simon Allison with “Hurricane Cerc” and “Yarkdale Samba” handled by Melvin Jacques were the last two dogs down on the first run, unfortunately one of the judges flushed a cock Pheasant and they deemed Simon’s dog to have passed game, and he was eliminated.
After the initial slow start, the game was now being flushed in sufficient numbers to ensure the trial flowed at a very good pace for the dogs that remained in the stake, and the cover that was presented to the questing dogs got even better as the trial progressed…..at this stage I began to wonder why I was so apprehensive at the start of the day, as things couldn’t have gone much better really….. good weather, fantastic ground, excellent game supply, smashing welcome from Steve Brankin the gamekeeper and his lovely wife Julie, also include good company from all the competitors and the many spectators …….. maybe I should learn to “chill out a little” as the younger generation might say.
By 1:15 pm all the dogs had been seen and our judges retired to compare books, after a fairly short deliberation they declared “Trial Over” and it was a gentle stroll back to the yard where the vehicles were parked, again Julie awaited our return with tea/coffee and a bun, which again was most welcome.
After being handed the results, it was much to my relief to read that first place had been awarded, and the elusive “Chequewood Trophy” after 3 years in the waiting had finally been won at long last. If I may explain, the Trophy was kindly donated to the club by Mr Jeff Davies. Some of our older members will certainly remember his Ftch Dog “Chequewood McCoy” anyway the first year I took it to our trial at Lydney Park….. No first awarded. Next it was New Farm Evesham…. No first awarded, I began to wonder if there might be a curse on it.
Presentations were completed and thanks given to all that had helped to make the day such the success it had been, especially to Steve and Julie our hosts, and our 4 judges. We do like when possible, to employ the 4 judges system, there are several reasons that bring us to believe that this not only benefits rookie judges, we are of the opinion that, whilst it may not eliminate judging error or frivolous accusations of favoritism completely, it certainly helps to alleviate the problem.
This being our last trial of the season…….it was wonderful to finish on such a high note.

Results of Novice Stake at New Farm Evesham
Held on Wednesday 12th November 2014
This trial was run over low root crop. Game supply was Partridge
With 2 competitors running late, we decided to delay the start of the trial, not only for the late arrivals but in hope that the weather forecasters prediction of an improvement in weather conditions would be true, fortunately they were correct, and the heavy rain that greeted us on arrival at the ground disappeared, and perfect weather stayed with us for the rest of the day.
The first brace of dogs down were Roger Wooldridge’s” Gola Star Storm” on the right hand beat, and Tom Shepard’s “Syncerus Schiller” on the left. Both had nice clean runs with Tom’s bitch concluding her 1st run in style by gathering a long retrieve that much more experienced dogs would have been proud of.
Next down was Christine Day’s” Lisgarvaghs Stride” and Steve Jones’s “Cippin Rainbow” unfortunately the brakes failed on Christine’s dog when it flushed a partridge and was lost, “Cippin Rainbow” went on to complete a nice clean run.
Next came Alan Rubery Jones’ “Sparnhill Adventurer” and Alice Wise’s “Thistlepark Chilli”, the latter completing a clean run, but it was Sparnhill Adventurer that caught the eye with it’s smart stylish hunting, she completed a fine run with a flushed Pheasant and equally fine retrieve.
Sarah Gazey’s “Pollgreen Agelina” and Chris Tozer’s “Springvill Jimmy Boy” came next, unfortunately both were lost during the course of the trial.
Andy Wilson’s Flaxdale Nea” and Andrew Sipson’s “Kestrel Moon” put their dogs to go, both hunted quite well although Kestrel Moon showed her inexperience by pulling on a little, but both Andy and Andrew made it through for a second run.”
Dogs 13 Fran Spencer’s “Dumbleton Flyer” and No 14 Jason Thompson’s “Raging Roxy” were cast off next, Jason’s bitch having an excellent run accompanied with a nice retrieve, whilst Fran completed her first run she would be eliminated on her 2nd run.
The last 2 dogs of the first run were Paul Challans’ “Merovigian Mistletoe” and Kevin Powell’s “Rosebay Kain” Kevin’s dog never really got going, this is so unlike Kevin’s Spaniels which normally are very aggressive hunters, sadly he failed on a retrieve, and was eliminated, Paul and Mistletoe went on to produce a nice clean run.
As the trial moved into the closing stages, most observers were of the opinion that the dogs in contention for the main awards were: Roger Wooldridge, Tom Sheppard, Steve Jones, Alan Rubery Jones, Jason Thompson, Paul Challans. Quite a list at this stage of the competition, which was a good indication of the quality of the dogs on display.
Roger Wooldridge gave a sigh of relief as Gola Storm picked a difficult Partridge from behind a hedge to complete both his runs, no such fortune for Tom Sheppard, his bitch was deemed to have passed a bird and was eliminated, but I expect Tom would be pleased with her overall performance, especially as this was her first time out.
Sparnhill Adventurer continued her second run in the same stylish way as her first run, a covey of Partridge then flushed to her left, a shot from one of our superb team of guns accounted for one of the birds, unfortunately the sight of the falling bird proved to much for her and she decided to make the retrieve before being commanded to do so, and was lost.
Jason Thompson’s Raging Roxy completed another excellent run with an equally accomplished retrieve, Steve Jones’ Cippin Rainbow was eliminated after a rather long run, as was Paul Challans with Merovigian Mistletoe, which was disappointing after having had such a nice first run . Andy Wilson and Maureen Smith completed their runs without any mishaps, this brought the trial to a close.
The judges then retired to compare books, which gave spectators and competitors the opportunity to speculate on whom the winner might be, the consensus of opinion was that it was between Roger Wooldridge and Jason Thompson, but with Jason just having the edge, which in my my humble opinion I agreed with.
I must stress that the above brief report is my opinion only, an opinion that may or may not be shared by the judges.
L/R Kevin John. Peter Moruzzi. Alex Badger. Jeff Rayner. Rob Lewis.Roger Woodridge. Maureen Smith. Jason Thompson.

Report
The trial commenced in woodland that contained a mixture of bramble and various scrub of a varying degree of density. The first brace of dogs hunted well even though the pheasants were a little thin on the ground, there was plenty of ground scent to keep the dogs interested as several rabbits were seen darting around, unfortunately none were shot.
We then hunted up through some game crop which contained a couple of pheasants, 2 were dispatched one quickly retrieved to hand, sadly the other proved a little more difficult, but was eventually picked.
From the small patch of game crop we moved back into some lovely woodland, absolutely perfect spaniel country, and it wasn’t to long before we were among the birds which were coming to hand at good rate, not to many, just sufficient numbers so the dogs had to work for them.
With the birds now cooperating, and the guns coping well with difficulties associated with woodland shooting, I felt the trial was looking likely to be completed in this wood, which proved to be the case, as shortly the last dog completed his run and the judges retired to compare their books. After a short while the judges announced that no dogs were required for further viewing, the secretary then declared “Trial Over” at 1:35 pm.

Test Report
Sunny skies greeted us as we arrived at Tal-y-clun Farm for our summer test, the test was hosted perfectly by Kevin & Jaqcui John and kindly sponsored by “Happy Dog”
We had 18 dogs in the novice and 19 i n the Open. Both tests were being run simultaneously, which made for fantastic viewing of both open and novice for the many spectators from our vantage point on the bank overlooking the test ground.
Even though the sunny conditions could have made it a little uncomfortable for the competing dogs, both our judges acted very sensibly by curtailing the amount of hunting expected of each dog down to the minimum, plus our hosts had provided more than adequate drinking water and cooling water tubs.
Both tests were completed by 12:30 pm which left plenty of time to enjoy the free buffet provided by the club, and well organised and presented by Jaqcui, all this in the comfortable room our hosts had provided for us.
Many thanks to all that made the day such a resounding success, with special mention to the following:
Jaqcui & Kevin John (Hosts & raffle prizes)
Scott Yeoman (Sponsor & raffle prize)
Mike Soroka (raffle prize)
Roger Shepherd ( providing guns & dummy throwers)
